Padesátka je tu. Místo darů prosím příspěvek ve prospěch politických vězňů a obránců lidských práv. Budu rád když se přidáte. Lidé s odvahou čelit diktátorům a bojovat za svobodu a právo mají můj obrovský obdiv a úctu. Děkuji Vám.

Jupí, budu mít narozky, dárky! Jenže, ne každý má to štěstí a čeká ho narozková oslava a dárek, třeba knížka.
Bude mi 34 a došlo mi, že mám všechno, co potřebuju a ještě mnohem víc. Udělejte mi radost tím, že uděláte radost někomu jinému. Děkuji!

Take a look at the FB profile
of People in Need.
People in Need has been helping at home and abroad for 29 years. We build schools in Africa, sources of clean water and health centres; we help the victims of military conflict and of natural disasters; we defend human rights. Here at home we lent a hand after all of the great floods. We organise the One World festival. In the Czech Republic we also provide social services, and help children, students and teachers in more than 3,300 schools.
Ethiopia is a country in the eastern part of the sub-Saharan Africa, in the area of the so-called Horn of Africa. Ethiopia itself is troubled by long lasting droughts and insufficient water pipe infrastructure.
More than half of the country’s population lack access to basic water sources, the rural areas being affected the most. The villagers are dependent on water from untreated sources, such as rivers or water holes. Drinking contaminated water carries with itself the risk of contagious disease infection. Children are the most endangered of all, in their case, drinking contaminated water can lead to frequent diarrhoea which often leads to malnutrition. 55 thousand children in Ethiopia die every year of diseases caused by shortage of clean water.
People in Need is building sources of drinking water in Ethiopia and taking care of their maintenance as well. We are helping to shorten path to water for the villagers who need to walk several hours every day to replenish their supply. Now, thousands are coming to our wells to drink clean water. We care about sustainability, which is why we train technicians who look after the water pipe system and take care of it. We are also raising public awareness about good hygiene practices in cooperation with local healthcare workers and volunteers, especially in the countryside. Water is a gift of life; this applies doubly in the case of Ethiopia.
Over the past 15 years of work in Ethiopia, we have built more than 560 water sources used by over half a million people.
“For as long as I could remember, water scarcity has always been a problem here. Before the new water scheme was built, the spring – a three-hour walk from our homes – was our only source of clean water. My wife gets up as early as 4 am to beat the long queue by the spring. She brings back a 20-liter jerrycan and my family and I consume this for five or six days, drinking only a glass each day.”
Mussie Hosholla, a man from the village of Dansha Gambela, describes the situation prior to People in Need’s intervention.

Many children living in deprived areas, often isolated on the outskirts of towns, have no motivation to attend school. They lack positive examples, and have no-one within their families who could help with homework.
The majority can expect to meet their parents' fate - almost no chance of work and long-term dependence on welfare payments. At the same time, education is an effect means of escaping the vicious circle of poverty and exclusion, with a chance of a fulfilling life.
Hundreds of our employees and volunteers are changing things for the better in 60 Czech and Slovak towns. We prepare pre-school clubs for first year registration, coaching them and showing their parents how education will help their children. We also run low threshold clubs, where children can spend their spare time without having to be on the street, and learn new skills.
We help 2 500 children per year along the road to better education.
„Katka's improvement in mathematics can be seen in every lesson. Her arithmetic is more assured, she logically works out more complex sums, and her marks show us that remedial work won't be needed this year.“
Volunteer Vendula, who coaches children at Predlice.
All amounts are shown in Euros.

People in Need is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation rooted in the ideas of humanism, liberty, equality and solidarity. We consider human dignity and freedom to be fundamental values. We believe that people everywhere must have the right to make decisions about their lives, and share in common the rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Donations from individuals and companies are exceptionally valuable to us, because they help us to build a more professional organisation and to help better; they also make it possible for us to react promptly to needs that we deem important, and which institutional donors are not yet supporting - for example humanitarian disasters, or supporting systemic change to limit the debt trade in the Czech Republic.
You can find a detailed overvew of our accounts in our annual reports and in the 'how we are administered' section of our website.
We regularly assist in countries afflicted by natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal, typhoons in the Philippines etc.), including all the major floods that hit the Czech Republic. In developing nations we help to provide health care, dig wells, build schools, and give the poor a chance to stand on their own feet. We support brave warriors for human rights in countries run by dictatorships or authoritarian regimes. We care for people who have lost their homes, schools and utilities to war.
We give a great deal of attention to work in the Czech Republic. We help the socially disadvantaged to escape the vicious circles of poverty and isolation, and warn those at risk of the dangers of debt traps. We coach ghetto children so that they have a chance of success in life. We show teachers modern educational methods, and help them prepare classes on contemporary world problems and modern history. We encourage children and students to be active and interested in their surroundings. Every year we arrange the One World film festival to support human rights.
Since 1992 we've helped a million people around the world. In 2014 we worked in more than 20 countries, and retain permanent missions in most. In the Czech Republic, we work with teachers and pupils in more than 3,000 schools.
„In an ever-changing world, filled not only with doubts about the future but also with huge amounts of energy and optimism, in a world of catastrophes wrought by tension, conflict and climatic variation, in a world that grows richer while differences in standards of living and numbers between the poor and the wealthy increase, there will always be a need and a space for our work.
Indeed, if I look at our work, which covers a broad range of activity through different sections, programmes and projects, the lynch-pin is clear- supporting people, so that they will be best able to make use of the opportunities in their lives."
Šimon Pánek, director, People in Need.
The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is now regarded as one of the world's most dire crises. In 2017 the country recorded the greatest number of internal refugees anywhere on the planet, and the number of acutely undernourished children (4.6 million) is also a global record.
Malnutrition afflicts young children and expectant mothers in particular, as they do not receive sufficiently nutritious foods. It is caused not only by poverty, but also by lack of access to clean water and healthcare, insufficient hygiene habits, and the low availability of educational services.
People in Need is working on the prevention and treatment of malnourishment in South Kivu province and Maniema, where hundreds of thousands live without access to healthcare. Reducing malnourishment is only of value if it can be combined with prevention - improving dietary and hygienic habits. We explain to families in training groups how to secure stable, long term and diverse food sources given local conditions, and provide basic hygienic advice. We teach them how to grow highly nutritious foodstuffs. We help with treatment in the most serious cases, train health workers and supply medicines to health centres
We cured 2,374 children under 5 years old of acute malnutrition in 2017.
More than 30,000 people (including more than 13,000 women in pre-natal care programmes in health centres) took part in adult education activities geared towards preventing malnutrition.
1,200 households grew highly nutritious foodstuffs thanks to the distribution of seeds, tools and education in how to cultivate them efficiently.
"The DR Congo is in its way an overlooked and forgotten country, where traditional humanitarian approaches have failed because of repeated conflicts over many years. Our team comes with new ideas, though, and has a great chance to change things here for the better."
Karolína Šklebená
People in Need's Head of Mission in the DR Congo
All amounts are shown in Euros.
1916 | pays for training the staff and equipping a nutritional centre to which malnourished children can be sent |
1149 | enables the examination of 30,000 children for malnourishment in hard to reach areas of eastern Congo |
575 | helps 20,000 people to learn essential hygienic habits through an educational campaign |
192 | cost of therapeutic milk to treat acute malnourishment in 100 children |
In countries with dictatorial or authoritarian regimes, criticism can lead to imprisonment, beatings, forced labour, loss of property, the persecution of relatives, torture and even death. In these countries, elections are systematically falsified, and people are ruled through fear, deceptive propaganda, and a system of benefits for the privileged few.
Even in these countries, there are still those with courage who fight for human rights and basic human values. If they are imprisoned for this, we help them.
In particular, we send the medical and hygienic supplies they would otherwise lack to those in prison. We provide legal aid and also support their families, who may face serious financial hardship if a family member is arrested - not just because of the loss of income, but often because other family members lose their jobs or are unable to find well-paying positions. On their release, we ensure that political prisoners receive high quality medical and psycho-social assistance, which as a general rule is what they most need.
People in Need has been supporting political prisoners for almost 20 years. Most place great value in the moral significance of this, and the knowledge that the world beyond their bars has not forgotten them.
“My father was the only member of the family earning. When he was arrested for defending human rights, it was hard for us to meet the family's expenses, not to mention his needs in jail. People in Need helped us not only financially, but morally.”
20 year old Alex (name changed for safety reasons), whose father was sentenced to 7 years in jail for political reasons.
All amounts are shown in Euros.
2299 | the cost of the fast (usually temporary) removal to a safe location when a defender of human rights is threatened, and of supporting them for 3 months. |
1724 | the cost of providing full legal services, including court and administrative charges, for a month (this amount may vary depending on country) |
383 | the average price for medical examintations and treatment for a political prisoner and their family |
192 | the average cost of supporting the family of a political prisoner for one month |
Classrooms are being filled with ever more students of varying needs. Every child needs an individual approach, in order to develop their potential and to be successful. Teaching assistants help not only the disadvantaged, but every child in the class. Schools, teachers, parents and pupils need not find themselves alone in their diversity if a teaching assistant is there to act as a partner.
There still aren't enough teaching assistants. They are active in some Czech schools, while elsewhere they plan to start contributing to education in coming years (not least thanks to a new amendment to the Schools Law, which came into force in 2016). Fantastic results have been achieved in schools where qualified teaching assistants already work, and where school management understands their role. In many cases, however, assistants don't have appropriate qualifications, or a chance to complement teaching, because the Czech Republic lacks a system of professional training for them.
We run training courses for teaching assistants, where they learn how best to communicate with students, how to collaborate with teachers, how to resolve particular situations and how to make full use of the potential inherent in their role. We have, for example, prepared a 50-hour course that combines online study with personal meetings. We also organise one-day courses concentrating on work with children from different linguistic backgrounds. We offer schools workshops where we can demonstrate how teaching assistants can help them.
A good teaching assistant can be a trump in the hand of any school. They could make education more pleasant for your child and their class, too. Help them to obtain appropriate qualifications.
In 2016/17 we trained 139 teaching assistants. We have organized blended learning courses, support groups and opened online library with methodical materials for pedagogic assistants with detailed fulltext search by keywords and methodologies free to download.
„I gained a new view of special needs teaching and diagnostics, and on selecting teaching aids. I have a better understanding of what teaching assistants should be doing, and how they should work effectively.“

All amounts are shown in Euros.
3065 | enables 20 teaching assistants to take part in a 5-hour combined study course, where they will master and develop their competence in handling various situations involving children's behaviour; this will be reflected in their own work, as well as their communication and collaboration with teachers |
460 | enables 15-20 teaching assistants to improve their professional knowledge on a one-day course |
115 | enables us to hold a workshop for a school, explaining how a teaching assistant can help them |

The One World international human rights film festival showcases visually stunning, original documentaries. These often cover burning issues and provide shocking evidence of clear human rights violations.
One World opens the eyes of young and old viewers alike - bringing new perspectives, providing information and inspire. After screenings, the festival holds debates with film-makers, protagonists and experts.
Festival works with a broad definition of human rights, and therefore in addition to films about political causes and development themes, the programme also includes films about social issues, the environment and lifestyles. By supporting the festival, you help bring Czech society face to face with important issues, through a cultural event that reaches more than 100,000 people.
Over the past 20 years One World has grown into the largest human rights documentary film festival in the world. Screenings and accompanying events take place in another 36 Czech towns. It has has been also the inspiration for the creation of other human rights festivals, for example in Myanmar (Burma), Venezuela and Kyrgyzstan.
Above all I was delighted by the interest shown by so many young people, and their reaction - for a moment it was as if no-one in the cinema was breathing. My husband and I perhaps belonged to an older, albeit tolerant, audience, but that didn't bother me. It's just a shame that the older generation isn't so interested in these films, perhaps they'd realise just how well we live... (One World 2013)

Czech society endured decades under dictatorship, yet despite this experience is losing its awareness that its current freedom is not assured and must be protected.
The Tales of Injustice project aims to raise awareness of these facts among the generation of young people born since the fall of Communism.
We offer schools documentary films, and produce materials for history teaching. We organise screenings in schools and meetings with eye-witnesses, historians and film-makers. We organise a literary competition for students, and hold seminars teaching educators how to use documentary films. Since 2009, students have awarded the Tales of Injustice Prize for courageous positions and acts during the time of the Communist regime.
More than 18 000 pupils from 405 elementary and secondary schools were envolved in 13th Month of Movies. Movie screanings about modern Czechoslovak history were taking place in schools along with debates with witnesses, historians and filmmakers.
„From Mr Čech we learned that it's important never to give in, and under all circumstances to do what you feel is right, and that you'll never have to regret.“
Nikola Voráčová, student at Dašice Gymnasium, Pardubice, after a meeting with Josef Čech, sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Communist regime for taking packages to the political prisoners in the Jáchymov Mines.

Women in Cambodia suffer a 30x greater risk of death in childbirth than those in the Czech Republic. At the same time, mortality among infants is also very high. Around 40% of Cambodian children suffer the negative effects of malnutrition.
Mothers lack information on child nutrition and health; many are guided by traditional superstitions that recommend giving newborns sweetened water instead of mother's milk, or giving them woven caps at 40°C to ward off evil spirits. Meanwhile, the first 1000 days are critical to a child's health.
People in Need works in villages in Kampong Chnang province that have above average levels of infant mortality. We train staff in health centres, and organise public education community campaigns so that mothers have enough information, and babies have a greater chance of survival. With the help of mHealth mobile technology, we improve mothers' awareness of nutrition and childcare.
In Takeo province, it has been possible to reduce the rate of death in childbirth by more than 75%.
„When a mother gives birth in our health centre, we help register them into a programme that advises them on how to keep the child safe and healthy.“

The civil war in Angola lasted for seventeen long years, and children are still suffering the consequences. In rural areas in particular, there are few schools or teachers, and only a minimum of teaching aids. Pupils may come from up to 10 km away, and are taught in two or three shifts.
Only a fifth of pupils complete the second stage of elementary schooling, and fewer than 4% go on to secondary schools. Most teachers are only slightly better educated than the children themselves. Around 80% of teachers in Angola lack teacher training. More than half of Angolans over 15 are illiterate. Bié province, where we work, has a population of 1.5 million but only a single library where children and teachers can study.
People in Need has been active in rural Angola since 2006. We have started building schools and teaching centres with libraries, and have recently been helping to improve the dysfunctional education system. With an active approach to the local population we have developed methods and objective manuals used by teachers working across Bié province. For children, this means attractive, high quality education. Will better education, Angolans will have more chance of a better life in a country devastated by war.
Thanks to our courses, more than 500 local teachers have attained minimum pedagogical standards.
"Our school has changed a great deal. I and all our teachers have come to see that we must pay more attention to the rights of children, actively assuring their access to education, and realised that there is plenty of space to improve the quality of teaching."
José Calivalo, primary school headmaster in Bié province.
